- When it came time for Johann Sebastian Bach to publish his Opus 1, what work do you think he picked? One of the sacred cantatas? One of the Brandenburg Concertos? One of the cello suites? No, none of the above. In 1726, Bach chose his B flat major Partita to start his publishing career -- and once a year for the next five years, he published five more partitas, then collected them under the title Clavier- bung in 1731. When it came time for Hungarian pianist Andr s Schiff to make his major-label debut, what work do you think he picked? Yes, that's right. In 1985, Schiff released his recording of the complete partitas -- and followed it with many more Bach recordings over the next few years until he'd released nearly the complete canonical works by 1996.And yes, Schiff's partitas are wonderful. Schiff has an elegant technique that never draws attention to itself no matter how knotty the notes, a graceful tone that always concentrates on the lyricism no matter how thick the counterpoint, and the consummate taste to know exactly how to place an accent, turn an appoggiatura, bend a phrase, and inflect a rhythm to make the music wholly his own without making it any less Bach's. Bach Sonates, BWV 1027 1029; Chorals Trios
- Here's one of those recordings that throws multiple unorthodox ideas at the listener; you don't think it could possibly work, but it has a unity that springs from creative intensity. French group Les Basses Réunies consists of Bruno Cocset, known as a cellist but here playing viols, plus a keyboard-and-contrabass continuo duo. The viols, in alto, tenor, and bass sizes, are "alla bastarda," a slippery term designating both an unorthodox way of playing a viol (hence the name) and eventually a new type of viol. They're copies of instruments from the seventeenth century, one of them pictured in the still life shown on the package and analyzed by art historian Dénis Grenier, an unusually direct correspondence between music and art among the releases in this series, which mostly have relied on abstract ideas. Cocset plays the three sonatas for viola da gamba and continuo, BWV 1027-1029. A seventeenth century viol brings a distinctively antique voice to these sonatas, but there are further surprises in store. Cocset embeds each sonata in a little trilogy beginning with a chorale prelude and ending with an organ trio sonata or, at the end, another chorale prelude -- all played by keyboard and viol, with or without double bass, with the viol taking over one line or one hand of the organ part. The whole project seems to take Bach's music merely as a point of departure for further creative activity, but Bach can stand up to a lot, and the music takes on a unique air of mystery and spiritual melancholy, almost as if one of the French viol masters of the late seventeenth century had somehow lived long enough to witness and react to Bach's maturity. An offbeat project even by the standards of the Alpha label, this should appeal greatly to any fan of the long tradition, running from Mozart to Wendy Carlos and beyond, of breaking Bach down and making something new of his music. Johann Sebastian Bach Sonate a 2 Clav. Pedal, BWV 525 530
- France's Alpha label has issued a marvelous series of mostly Baroque and Classical-era pieces, in booklets sumptuously illustrated not only with items relevant to the performance at hand but also with a painting, fully analyzed by Quebec historian Denis Grenier, that may relate more or less closely to the musical works on the album. The painting included here has only an abstract relationship to Bach's six trio sonatas for keyboard; Grenier likens the crossing lines of the trio sonata texture, so cleverly transferred by Bach to the keyboard from its usual ensemble medium, to the multiple sight lines in the murkily sexy interior view by seventeenth century Dutch artist Samuel van Hoogstraten. It's a tenuous connection, but a really interesting painting, with slippers on the floor and keys swinging from a lock. Bach's sonatas have been performed on organ and pedal harpsichord. Keyboardist Benjamin Alard has played both organ and harpsichord; here he uses a modern French organ from the Eglise Saint-Louis en l'Ile in Paris, generally built in the style of German organs of Bach's time but not copied from any single example. It's a delightful instrument, sweet and melodious and not in the least ponderous, and Alpha's engineers have done their usual fine job in capturing its sounds. Alard's readings and registrations seem aimed at maximum clarity; he does little to make particular movements stand out, with generally consistent tempo choices throughout. Various choices exist for these sonatas, and whether one prefers this or the more colorful readings of Christopher Herrick on Hyperion, say, is a matter primarily of taste.
